Transportation & Infrastructure

Our transportation system includes excellent rail service provided by the Stourbridge Line, with access to the three principal Class 1 railroads operating in the eastern United States: Norfolk Southern Railway (NS), CSX System, and Canadian Pacific (CP Rail). Having a choice of rail service provides effective rate competition that is difficult to find in rural areas. Our highways connect us to three metro areas with a combined population of 22 million. Two private airports are located within the county, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport is 30 minutes away and a key regional asset that connects businesses to national and international markets.

Highway Access
Interstate 84 runs along the southern portion of Wayne County allowing goods and services to move east to New York State, northern New Jersey and Connecticut, and west to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  Fifteen minutes travel from Exit 17 to the junction of I-81, 380 and 84 provides access to the entire north/south corridor from Philadelphia to Canada.

Scenic U.S. Route 6 transverses the County from east to west, connecting to the Gov. Robert P. Casey Highway, a 15-mile stretch of 4-lane highway that begins at the junction of I-81, 380, and 84.  U.S. Route 191 is the major north/south arterial highway. Starting at Honesdale, travel Route 191 north for 30 miles to NYS Route 17, future I-86, or south for 25 miles to I-84. Other critical highway routes include U.S. Routes 296, 370, 371, 507, 590.

Rail
The Stourbridge Line Railroad provides access to the three principal Class 1 railroads operating in the Eastern United States: Norfolk Southern Railway (NS), the CSX System, and Canadian Pacific (CP Rail).  The local railroad is a "Shortline" operation known as the Stourbridge Railway. Privately-owned, the railroad is managed by Morristown & Erie Railway, Inc. of New Jersey. The Stourbridge Railway directly interchanges at Lackawaxen, PA, with the New York Susquehanna & Western Railway, a subsidiary of Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX that now owns the mainline route between Binghamton and Port Jervis. Therefore rail users have their choice of shipping via NS, CSX, or CP Rail through interchange connections in Binghamton, NY, North Bergen, NJ, and Syracuse, NY.  This provides for effective rate competition, which is difficult to find anywhere in the country, but particularly in rural areas. Freight service and switching are provided on as as-needed basis, seven days a week with emergency shipping at any time to prevent interruptions in the product stream.
